Jewel of east London #1: The Tower of London

The Tower of London is the gateway to east London.

Admission: I think every single tourist who comes to London visits this monument.  However, I was surprised to learn that many locals have never entered. The admission charge can be prohibitive, although Tower Hamlets locals can get in for a pound.  If you are going to be spending an extended amount of time in London, you must buy the HRP annual pass, which includes the Tower as well as several other treasures to the west.  It is also possible to attend the Ceremony of the Keys for free.

Neighbourhood: Tower of London is near several fun neighbourhoods.  Before we decided to shell out for the annual pass, we often picnicked in the nearby gardens and used thsi as a starting point for walks along the river, to St. Katherine's Dock and beyond.

Food: The Tower of London cafe is great for tea.  Outside the tower, you can find many decent chain restaurants, including a rare second story Wagamama with a nice view.  I remember back when Wagamama was a tourist attraction in itself.  This is one of its better locations.
