Souvenirs of east London #1

The best souvenirs of east London are going to be your memories and photographs. Listed are other things you might take out of east London as a souvenir, keepsake, or gift.

Historic photograph of the East End from Getty Images Gallery, such as this one of a whelk stall from their east exhibition.

Jewels from the Tower of London.  Not the crown jewels, but you can buy something according to your budget, the top of the line at the The Jewel House Shop.  The Museum of London also sells pretty Cheapside Hoard  replicas.

Bobby Moore Memorial Jersey from the West Ham Store.

Plush toy Wenlock Mascot from the Olympics shop at Westfield Stratford City.  It's only an Olympic city once... or thrice. The mascot might look strange but will make an interesting show-and-tell item.

Rhyming Cockney Slang dictionary from the Museum of London.  I got one of these even before I had heard of the East End.

Booths Map of London Poverty.  A cutout of Whitechapel and Spitalfields is available as a mousepad at Museum of London Docklands (photo not available).

Bottle of chocolate porter from Meantime Pub.

Book from an independent east London bookshop such as the children's specialist Victoria Park Books, Newham Bookshop, or Stoke Newington bookshop.  This local children's classic is written by the former UK children's laureate Michael Rosen, from Dalston.

Shoes from Unze, an East Ham brand with Asian glimmer. Branches at Westfield Stratford City and high streets all over east London (Whitechapel, Green Street, Ilford).

Sequins dress from All Saints, clothing chain with Spitalfields design base. I prefer their bolder winter dresses but Sandra Bullock likes this one which is currently available.

Magnet from the Prime Meridian, Royal Observatory Greenwich.  A truly "east London" line, the Royal Observatory projects laser line along it which runs from Greenwich, through to Walthamstow, and is even visible in Epping Forest.

Toy from the Museum of Childhood.  Witches were hunted in Essex a few hundred years ago and their magic has been on display at recent temporary exhibits here and at the Vestry House Museum.

Jewelry by Tatty Devine, East End designs which are deeply retro and parochial - precisely what Bethnal Green is all about. This pirate sword necklace is a swashbuckling reminder of the pirates, such as Captain Kidd, hung in Wapping.

William Morris printed item.  Currently these drink coasters are available from the V&A shop  and there are items at the Vestry House Museum.  You will be able to shop at the William Morris Gallery when it re-opens in Summer.  In the meantime if you want to make it authentically east London and support the gallery, there is a Friends group.  This is the guy who said "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful", so make sure it complies.  Wrap it in William Morris wrapping paper, and embellish with a postcard featuring William Morris' wife Jane, the Pre-Raphaelite beauty gracing the Tate Britain and the V&A.

Made in Dagenham DVD, from Blockbuster in Dagenham to be authentic.  Idris Elba of The Wire worked at Dagenham's late Ford plant (buy that one too while you're there, best TV show ever). Stay in east London too long and you'll be a little union organizer yourself.

And my number one thing from east London: a Pearly king or queen suit.  Sorry but money can't buy you everything, you will have to make your own!
